July 1999, Camp Baker

Page 2

This year we went to Camp Baker for summer camp. We had 11 scouts, 3 Japanese, and 3 adults: Matt C, Trevor d, Ty F, Ian F, Grant K, Curtis M, David M, Amphil R, Conrad S, Kyle W, and Andy W. There were a group of Japanese students spending a month or so in the USA, and their first stop (for the boys) was Camp Baker. Three of them stayed with us most of the week, and they added a lot to the experience. They were T Shuichi, K Satoru, and M Taiki. The three adults along were Jody F, Dave R, and Don S.

This web page is a little bigger then most. In addition, some of the photos have an extra level of detail. So once you click on the small version of the picture you get an image which more or less fits the web browser. For some of the photos, you can click that image, and get a large photo. You may want to use this large photo if you want to print something on your printer. I didn't put small versions of all of the photos on this page, as that would be more huge then necessary. If you go to look at one of the photos, there are arrows at the bottom which will take you to other photos. You can get to the related photos in that fashion.

Jody also took a set of photos of the Slime Master 2000. This looks like a great project. If it is available at a time when the troop goes to Camp Baker again, I'd encourage any of the scouts who are old enough to participate.

Wednesday

By Wednesday, the Slime Master 2000 was pretty much completed.
The scouts in the Swimming merit badge were attempting to turn their clothing into makeshift life preservers.
A bit of history here. Camp Baker has a regular Scout Master Belly Flop. They gather as many of the adult leaders who are willing to jump into the lake and try to make the bigest splash. Two years ago, Don decided that he wasn't going to be able to compete with some of the bellies hanging around, so he sent an assistant into town to buy the ugliest suit possible at the local GoodWill store, and he went in as a "Used Car Salesman". It was enough to earn him first prize. He told the scouts that the next time he would up the ante, and do the belly flop in a dress. Then he resigned his post as scoutmaster. So now it was the new scoutmaster's turn to keep up the tradition. The comments and looks almost made it worthwhile, even if it only earned second place. Oh well. Some of the various contestants show their stuff.
Egads! It's the White Thing (who ended up with first prize). Some of the waterfront staff was also involved. PFD Man went in, and was in no danger of sinking. It was unclear if he'd get his face out of the water, but he wasn't going to sink.
The competition involved four jumps. The first was a classic belly flop. The sound was awful. The second was falling over onto your back. This was far worse. The third was freestyle, and the fourth was everyone going in at one time. The docks were not designed with this sort of loading.
Two of the Japanese students decided to try the climbing tower. They roped up, listened to the instructions, and walked right up the wall. Jody's comment was "They have either done this before, or didn't know it was supposed to be hard". They made it look easy.
In order to complete the Climbing merit badge, Trevor spent a lot of time at the wall. Wednesday night was Dunes Night. The entire camp went out to a series of sand dunes and participated in a series of games. Some of the scouts ran a fair distance in a foot race (one of the Japanese students took 2nd place in his heat). and some of them tried to be creative while jumping off the edge of a serious sand dune. Some just sit and watched.
