Three Sisters Wilderness 50 mile hike, day 2

The next day we traveled a long ways heading South along the West side of the three Sisters. Sunshine Meadow looked like a fantastic place to explore. That night we stopped at a meadow that was a the top of a saddle, we thought the mosquitoes would be fewer at the higher elevation. We were wrong!!! The mosquitoes were terrible that night. The boys still played Frisbee for a while. A deer watched them from the side of the meadow. We eat dinner, crawled into our tents and hid from the mosquitoes. It was still very light out but before long I heard sleeping noises from the other tents and my tent partner. It must have been a long day.

It's time to wake up. The scouts start to develop their routines to get them through the week.

The flowers were everywhere where there was some sort of soil and sun.

We were able to get water from the mountain streams and snow packs throughout the week.

The landscape changed from hour to hour.

The effects of volcanic action were visible everywhere.

This morning there were high clouds hiding the peaks of the mountains. It eventually did clear off.

The Husband off in the distance.

The trail sometime stretches off into the distance. However, usually the changes in scenery are often enough to make the hike quite interesting.

After the clouds burn off, North Sister shows through.

We saw many types of rock along the trip. This was a rubble pile which had pieces falling off. We also saw lots of obsidian, pumice, and other types of volcanic rock.

Along the trail, I noticed that many of the trees had a curve at the base, always pointed downhill. Presumably the snow falling on young trees causes them to form this way.

As the day went on, we got closer to The Husband.

The lava flows were quite steep.

The scouts stopped at a rock outcrop overlooking the lake and South Sister.

Some of the scouts relaxing by the lake.

We eventually made our way into an area above Mesa Creek to evade the mosquitoes. It didn't work. The kids played with Ty's frisbee.

South Sister visible from our campsite.
