Three Sisters Wilderness 50 mile hike, day 1

The first night we did not make it all the way to the Sunshine Meadow area at the top of Obsidian trail (West side of Middle Sister). We stopped about a mile short of that area, a place we will call Sunset Point. We ended up eating diner in the dark. After eating we set up the bear bag and the Scouts went to their tents. Dave and I stayed up watching the stars for a while. The stars were great and I occasionally saw a meteor. There were odd flashes that lit up the sky on occasion that we could not explain. Kevin H. later told us that there was a thunder storm to the North and we were seeing the flash from lightning. Mosquitoes were a small problem.

We left Corvallis at about 2:00 PM, and arrived at the Obsidian Trailhead about 6:00. Everyone got their gear together so we could head on out.

The first several miles were spent in the woods, gaining elevation.

Eventually we approached the lava fields where we could see North and Middle Sister over the horizon.

As dusk sets, we can see Obsidian Falls and other mountains on the horizon.

There were lots of wildflowers that we saw along the trail.

Mt. Washington and Mt. Jefferson off in the distance.
